FAQ
Lab disclosure, rankings & independence
Quick answers drawn from the methodology and ranking rules for Best Baby Food Ranked. For product-specific citations, open each product page.
How are baby foods and formulas ranked on this site?
By published lab disclosure and cited third-party concern flags — not by invented ppb numbers. World of Baby Food (Best Baby Food Ranked) follows a fixed priority order: (1) disclosure exhaustiveness for baby food under California AB899 (
public_web ahead of lot_code_gate, ahead of none/unknown); (2) independent lab concern flags from cited sources only (Consumer Reports formula Mar 2025; CR baby food Jun 2023); (3) brand COA / voluntary batch labs when independently findable and dated; (4) secondary category usefulness for parents, which never overrides 1–3. Full detail is on the methodology page.Does affiliate status or Amazon commissions change rank?
Never. Rank order is editorial and driven by the published methodology and cited sources. There are 0 paid placements. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Affiliate status never changes rank. Amazon associate tags for US/UK are placeholders until configured — links are not monetized in this MVP.
What is California AB899 and how does it affect rankings?
California AB899 requires certain baby-food makers to test for toxic elements and make results available. We use disclosure pattern as a ranking signal: full lot results posted on the public web without a gate rank ahead of lot-code–gated portals, which rank ahead of brands with no findable disclosure. Infant formula is exempt from AB899, so formula rows rely on Consumer Reports and brand COAs instead — not AB899 web portals.
Which toxic elements do you track?
The cited sources focus on toxic elements commonly tested in baby food and formula — especially arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury where reported. We do not invent microgram or ppb values. When a source states a concern level or a non-detect, we cite that source; when a quantitative value is not published, the product page shows that gap rather than a filled-in number.
What counts as brand-published data versus an independent test?
Brand-published data means lot or batch results the manufacturer posts (AB899 portals, public COAs, or dated voluntary batch labs). Independent tests mean third-party work we cite by name and date — currently Consumer Reports formula (Mar 2025) and baby food (Jun 2023), plus the Unleaded Kids AB899 transparency audit used to classify disclosure patterns. Both kinds of evidence are labeled; we do not blend unpublished numbers into a single synthetic score.
Why is infant formula treated differently from baby food?
Infant formula is exempt from California AB899’s public baby-food testing portal rules. Formula rankings on this site therefore lean on cited CR findings and brand COAs when available, not AB899 disclosure tiers. Baby food (pouches, jars, snacks, and similar) can use AB899 disclosure pattern as the first ranking axis.
Are Consumer Reports numbers used as exact product scores?
No. CR reports are cited context and concern flags — lots, methods, and reporting formats differ across studies and years. We never invent ppb to “complete” a row. Product pages and the methodology list the specific CR pieces used so parents can read the primary source.
What do disclosure labels like public_web and lot_code_gate mean?
public_web means full lot results are posted without requiring a lot code to view them. lot_code_gate means results exist behind a lot-code lookup. none / unknown means we could not independently find published batch disclosure for that brand or line at review time. Labels describe access pattern, not a medical judgment.Where do heavy-metal values come from — do you estimate missing numbers?
No estimates. Every quantitative claim on World of Baby Food comes from a cited published source or a brand COA / AB899 disclosure we could verify. If a value is not published, we leave it blank or note the research gap. Rankings prioritize disclosure quality and cited flags; they do not invent fill-in metals data.
